Asbestos is still regularly discovered in both commercial and residential dwellings. The risk is significant for UK properties constructed before 2000. The presence of Asbestos Containing Materials (ACM) is sometimes known, but undetected ACM is often identified when it is disturbed after a building sustains damage.
Structured Designs staff are 'asbestos awareness' trained, and we can provide an initial survey and assessment of the damaged areas to identify asbestos materials or suspected ACM. Structured Designs routinely takes samples and has suspected ACM tested. If a negative result, work can continue; if a positive result, decisions can be made on whether the asbestos is contained or removed by a licensed contractor. Insurers normally cover asbestos removal costs.
Asbestos Risks
A failure to assess for asbestos places the homeowner at significant immediate and future risk of harm. The effects of asbestos inhalation may only show 20+ years after contact, and the outcome is at best debilitating, but usually fatal. Asbestos can be found in multiple building products.
